“Fiesta Del Sol – Moving off the Grid”

When: Sat, June 05, 2010 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Where: Fletcher Cove Solana Beach, California (Fletcher Cove Park) map

Solana Beach, CA – Fiesta del Sol, the annual free celebration of Solana Beach’s distinctive beach side lifestyle that’s become one of the largest festivals in San Diego County, once again returns the weekend of June 5-6.

Co-presented by the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Green Chamber of San Diego County, 2010 Fiesta Del Sol is expected to attract more than 50,000 attendees over Saturday and Sunday.

The 31st annual event will take place adjacent to Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach within the area bordered by South Sierra Avenue and Acacia Avenue. The two-day fiesta opens each morning at 9:00 a.m. with the arts & crafts fair and closes each evening at 9:00 p.m. after the conclusion of the last musical performance.

Among the many attractions, under the green theme of “Moving Off the Grid,” will be a wide range of continuous live musical performers booked by the famed Belly Up Tavern, plus an eclectic array of arts and crafts exhibits, merchant booths, children’s activities, an international-themed food court and an adults-only beer and wine beverage garden.

“Our event always has something for everyone and we’re proud to say that it’s going to be better than ever this year,” said Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce President David Carroll. “With free admission and a great variety of experiences, Fiesta Del Sol continues to delight the thousands of people who come back year after year.”

In adopting an environmental theme, this year’s Fiesta Del Sol will be powered largely by solar, bio-diesel and other renewable energy sources.

“The Green Chamber of San Diego County is excited to be a part of Fiesta this year,” said Green Chamber CEO Peter Zahn, who’s also serving this year as Chairman of 2010 Fiesta Del Sol. “With the growing awareness of the benefits of environmental sustainability, we’re bringing another dimension to this already awesome festival.”

The Fiesta will rock several square blocks in Solana Beach with a diverse musical showcase of 14 bands providing continuous live music. The lineup is rich with rock, reggae, soul, funk, jazz, blues, Latin and world beat, to name a few, spanning cultures and countries from Africa to Brazil to the USA.

The festival opens Saturday morning June 5 at 9:00 am with children’s and local community performances, including the Boys and Girls Clubs Youth Arts Academy, and the popular Diaper Derby.

Featured bands begin at 1pm: Aggrolites, Balkan Beat Box, World Anthem, Sol e Mar, Rolling the Stones, Lukas Nelson and Hoi Polloi. The event continues at 7:30 am Sunday, June 6, with the Solana Beach Firefighters Pancake Breakfast.

Sunday’s entertainment program includes local acts and the following featured bands starting at 1pm: Stranger, Timmy Curran, surf guitar legend Dick Dale, Atomic Groove and Candye Kane.

Also in the works are a new wine garden featuring select wines paired with tantalizing fare; additional children’s hands-on activities; an enclosed paintball venue; and a “Green Alley” featuring environmentally-friendly products and services.

Returning activities and games for kids are the llama rides, the “Dragon,” swings, climbing wall, the train, face painter and hair salon. Merchant booths are plentiful this year showcasing everything from jewelry to apparel to local artwork to “one-of-a-kind treasures.”

The International Food Court is back – offering attendees a wide range of culinary choices. The non-profit booths are always a welcome addition to the event. And the Beverage Garden, with its view of the performing stage, is a popular spot to meet with friends and make new ones while enjoying beverages provided by the event’s major sponsor, Markstein Beverage Company.

Attendees are encouraged to get to connect with the “green” movement by carpooling, biking, walking or using public transportation to the event such as the Coaster and The Breeze, using the shuttle at the train station, recycling over the festival weekend and also making changes in their everyday lives to help our planet.

The 2010 Fiesta Del Sol is generously sponsored by Markstein, distributor of Budweiser, Bud Lite and other beverage products.

Other sponsors include: American Assets, Solana Beach Corporate Centre, Lomas Santa Fe Plaza, Solana Beach Towne Centre, California Doors & Windows, Welk Resorts, San Diego County Fair, North County Transit District, Jack FM Radio 100.7, 91X, The Reader and City Beat.

Why we joined the Green Chamber

I participate in a few of the various green networking organizations around San Diego, and liked the idea of something more organized and consistent as a means to share referrals, support, wisdom and fun!
